After War Gundam X has received new official artwork as part of the anime’s 30th anniversary campaign. Released on September 25, 2026, the visual places Garrod Ran, Tiffa Adill and Gundam DX beneath the moon, a recurring part of the series’ identity. It was produced by two creators connected to the original anime: character designer Nobuyoshi Nishimura and mechanical designer Junya Ishigaki.

The reveal coincides with a limited return to Japanese theaters. From September 25 through October 1, five TOHO Cinemas locations are screening four selected episodes. Together, the new image, theatrical program and archival materials frame the anniversary as a reintroduction to the 1996 work. The announcement, however, does not include a sequel, remake or another new anime.

Four episodes trace the series’ arc

The program includes episodes 1, 14, 29 and 39, selected from the show’s 39 installments. It begins with “Is the Moon Out?”, continues with “Can You Hear My Voice!” and “Look at Me,” and closes with “The Moon Is Always There.” The selection is not a replacement for the full series. Instead, it draws a direct line from the introduction of Garrod and Tiffa through the development of their relationship and into the finale.

Screenings are being held in Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka. The program also includes A boy with GUNDAM, a prologue produced for Gundam’s 50th anniversary project. On September 27, the Ikebukuro location is hosting an event with director Shinji Takamatsu, character designer Nobuyoshi Nishimura, mechanical designer Junya Ishigaki and Wataru Takagi, Garrod’s Japanese voice actor.

This schedule is confirmed only for Japan. The announcement consulted for this article did not provide information about international screenings or a global release of the anniversary program.

An anniversary built around the catalog

After War Gundam X began airing on April 5, 1996, as the third entry in Gundam’s Alternative Series. Its story presents an Earth devastated by colony drops and follows the crew of the Freeden as Garrod tries to protect Tiffa. The conflict involving the Freeden, the New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army also gives the series room to examine the meaning of Newtypes outside Gundam’s main continuity.

The new visual draws on that history without implying an expansion of the canon. The moon is more than a background element: it is tied to Gundam X’s energy system and to episode titles that bookend the series. Releasing the artwork during Japan’s celebration of the full autumn moon turns a narrative symbol into a bridge between the show and its anniversary date.

Other parts of the campaign follow the same preservation and recirculation strategy. One project places 39 posters, each based on an individual episode, at Gundam-related facilities across Japan. The production is also preparing the A.W. 30th Chronicle archive book, which is set to include episode guides, sketches, planning documents and interviews. Taken together, these activities organize production history and key moments for longtime viewers while offering specific entry points for people who did not see the original broadcast.

That distinction matters more than treating the anniversary as evidence that the series itself is returning. The campaign contains newly made material, but its confirmed purpose is to frame and make an existing work visible again. Any claim about a sequel or remake remains speculation unless Bandai Namco Filmworks issues a separate announcement.
