Fortnite returns to Australia’s App Store; broader iOS opening starts in 2027
The game’s readmission is immediate, while alternative stores, direct downloads and new payment options depend on orders taking effect in March 2027. Apple plans to appeal.
R42 / SUMMARY
Fortnite returned to Australia’s App Store on October 22, 2026 after a Federal Court order. The ruling separates the game’s immediate readmission from broader iOS changes scheduled for March 1, 2027, and Apple said it will seek a stay and appeal.
KEY POINTS
- Fortnite was immediately readmitted to Australia’s App Store after a Federal Court order.
- Alternative stores, direct downloads and outside payment options begin on March 1, 2027, unless a later court decision changes the schedule.
- The measures apply to Australian Apple Accounts and preserve security scanning and notarization.
- Apple said it will seek a stay and appeal; no stay had been granted at publication time.
Fortnite returned to Australia’s App Store on Thursday, October 22, 2026 under an order from the Federal Court of Australia. The return ends the game’s absence from that market, which began in August 2020 after Apple removed it when Epic Games introduced its own payment system. The immediate remedy, however, does not mean the iPhone is already open to competing app stores in Australia.
The judgment sets two different clocks. Apple must readmit Fortnite and other conventional Epic apps that comply with the App Store requirements that apply to them. The structural orders — alternative app stores, direct app downloads and payment options outside Apple’s system — take effect at noon Melbourne time on March 1, 2027. Apple may apply in February for an extension to May 3, but the court would have to grant it.
What changes for Australian iPhone users
The remedies follow a 2025 finding that Apple used its market power to restrict iOS app distribution and payment processing. The new orders prevent the company from blocking or hindering those alternatives for Australian Apple Accounts. Developers enrolled in the Apple Developer Program may participate even if they are based outside Australia, provided they meet the relevant conditions.
The opening does not remove technical controls. Apps offered outside the App Store may still face an automated security and privacy scan and must be notarized by Apple or a qualified third party. The court also addressed fees and conditions that could operate as barriers: Apple cannot use discriminatory or deterrent charges to neutralize the new routes, although the judgment does not say that all legitimate compensation for intellectual property or developer tools is forbidden.
That distinction explains the ruling’s broader importance. Fortnite resolves access for a particular product now; the 2027 measures change the commercial architecture surrounding every eligible app. Consumers may gain more ways to install software and pay for digital content. Developers gain room to negotiate distribution, commissions, technical support and security outside a system that previously centered almost every transaction on the App Store.
An appeal keeps the outcome in motion
Apple said it disagrees with the decision and will seek a stay and appeal, arguing that it needs to protect its intellectual property and user security. At publication time, there was no confirmation that a stay had been granted. Fortnite’s return is therefore a completed event, while implementation of the 2027 measures could still be affected by later court decisions.
Epic celebrated the game’s return and said it intends to bring the Epic Games Store to iOS in Australia. That is a company statement, not a confirmed launch date. The court’s own framework shows why: an alternative store will require technical implementation, compliance work and the verification mechanisms described in the orders.
The case is geographically limited as well. The measures apply in Australia and to Australian Apple Accounts; they do not by themselves create a worldwide rule for the iPhone. Even so, the combination of immediate readmission and a scheduled opening creates a practical test of how competition and security can coexist on a mobile platform that previously excluded other stores.

R42 / FAQ
Is Fortnite available on iPhone again in Australia?
Yes. The game returned to Australia’s App Store on October 22, 2026 following the Federal Court’s readmission order, provided it continues to meet the rules applicable to apps distributed through the store.
Can Australians already install the Epic Games Store on iPhone?
Not yet as a result of this ruling. The orders enabling alternative stores and direct downloads take effect on March 1, 2027. Epic has said it intends to launch its store in the country but has not confirmed an exact date.
Does the ruling remove all Apple security checks?
No. Apps distributed outside the App Store may still undergo an automated security and privacy review and must be notarized by Apple or a qualified third party.
Does Apple’s appeal automatically cancel the changes?
No. Apple said it will seek a stay and appeal, but announcing an appeal does not automatically cancel the orders. The schedule changes only if the court grants a stay, an extension or another form of relief.
