Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres with 10 episodes and a game update

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premiered worldwide on Netflix on October 20, 2026, with all ten episodes available at once. The new CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger production returns to Night City four years after the first installment, but it does not directly continue David Martinez's story. Instead, it introduces an all-new cast in a standalone narrative about revenge, redemption and the different ways people record the city's violence.

The premiere has also become an event for the game that established this version of the universe. CD Projekt Red announced the Edgerunners 2 Update, the promotional name for Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5. The free release is scheduled for October 22 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch 2 edition will follow, although it does not yet have an exact date.

A new crew takes over Night City

The second installment retains the city and its conflict among mercenaries, corporations and invasive technology, but changes the point of view. Weak is a veteran trying to find purpose after giving up his chrome. D is a Snake Nation netrunner seeking revenge for the destruction of her clan. Roman is a young cinephile determined to document real stories in a city that has moved on to braindance. This structure lets the anime return to the same world without relying on a resurrection or an artificial continuation for its previous protagonists.

Kai Ikarashi directs the series, Kanno Ichigo serves as lead character designer, and Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner, story writer and producer. Masahiko Otsuka is also among the returning creative collaborators. The arrangement preserves part of the team responsible for the franchise's identity while making room for another visual language and characters with their own motivations.

The anime is feeding back into the game

Update 2.5 will include content inspired by Edgerunners 2, along with new items and features. CD Projekt Red scheduled a REDstreams broadcast and official patch notes ahead of release. Until those materials are published, it is not possible to confirm which equipment, quests, appearances or technical changes will be included. The initial announcement establishes a thematic link but does not define its full scope.

That distinction matters because an update tied to an adaptation can range from cosmetic references to broader mechanical changes. The first anime helped renew interest in Cyberpunk 2077, but the current announcement provides no audience, sales or player figures. Any expectation of another measurable increase should therefore be treated as editorial inference rather than a confirmed result.

A shared-universe strategy rather than a simple sequel

The coordinated release shows how CD Projekt Red is using Night City as a shared narrative platform. The anime can tell complete stories without repeating the game's protagonists, while the RPG receives elements that connect both audiences. This approach keeps the franchise active without turning the series into a straightforward adaptation of the playable campaign.

There is also a clear boundary: the update does not replace the anime, and the season has not been presented as required viewing for understanding the game. That separation lowers the barrier to entry and lets each work stand on its own.
