Huawei introduced the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design in China on Monday, September 7. The new smartphone uses two hinges to turn a closed handset into a 10.2-inch display, but it changes a structural feature from earlier models in the line: the flexible panel now folds inward and stays protected when the device is closed.

The flexible display is no longer exposed
The original Mate XT used an accordion-like fold. That approach allowed part of the same panel to serve as the outer screen, but it left a flexible section exposed even when the device was closed. On the Mate XT 2, both ends fold over the central section, while a separate 6.5-inch panel handles everyday use on the outside.
When fully opened, the phone provides a 10.2-inch flexible OLED display with a resolution of 2232 by 3184 pixels. The device weighs about 299 grams and is 12.3 millimeters thick when closed. Those figures define the category’s tradeoff: the viewing area approaches that of a small tablet, but the hardware remains heavier and thicker than a conventional phone.
Huawei also sells a version with a privacy display. According to the company, the panel uses independent pixels that can switch between wide and narrow viewing angles, reducing visibility from the sides without changing the resolution for someone looking straight at it. The 1TB configuration with this feature costs 24,999 yuan, which is 1,000 yuan more than the equivalent version with the standard display.
The privacy feature is a confirmed product specification, but its practical effectiveness still requires independent testing across different brightness levels and environments. The same distinction applies to Huawei’s durability claims: the phone carries IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance, although the product page itself says it is not a professional waterproof device.
The new chip arrives with manufacturer claims
The Mate XT 2 debuts Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro and runs HarmonyOS 7 in China. Huawei says the architecture associated with its Tau Scaling Law principle and LogicFolding technology improves performance and efficiency by shortening signal paths inside the chip. Those statements describe the company’s engineering claim; at launch, there is not yet a broad set of independent tests that would support a conclusive comparison with rival processors.
The hardware includes 16GB of RAM, storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB, and multitasking with as many as three apps side by side. The price and form factor put the Mate XT 2 outside the mass market. Its most immediate commercial role is to demonstrate how far Huawei can take folding displays, hinges, and multi-window software while reinforcing its position in China’s premium segment.
According to IDC data cited by Reuters, Huawei led China’s smartphone market in the second quarter of 2026 with a 22.6 percent share. The company also accounted for 68 percent of foldable-phone shipments in China during the period, according to Smart Analytics Global.
