Hunter’s Moon launched on PlayStation 5 on Monday, October 26, with an unusual approach to historical horror: it places the player in the role of a woman accused of witchcraft and makes social persecution, rather than the supernatural alone, the main source of tension. The debut game from independent studio Twin Swans is a first-person narrative experience set over a single night in a rural 17th-century English village.

The protagonist is Lilith Thorne, who must cross the village, forests and moorland without being captured. Witch hunters, a magistrate and other pursuers restrict her routes, while conversations heard through doors and windows reveal information about the residents. Instead of treating the community as background scenery, the game turns observation into a decision-making tool: listening may warn of danger, expose local conflicts or provide information that helps Lilith escape.

Real history informs the horror and its mechanics

Writer-director Alicia Contestabile began developing the idea as a screenplay in 2019 while working at Crows Crows Crows. According to the creator, research into English witch trials and persecution shaped a story in which fear, belief and collective pressure can be more threatening than monsters. That is the studio’s stated artistic interpretation, not a claim that the game reconstructs one specific historical case.

In an interview with Creative Bloq, Contestabile said the structure of overheard conversations was inspired by games that distribute narrative through the environment. Hunter’s Moon expands that idea with roughly 100 voiced characters performed by 48 actors. Its visual direction combines three-dimensional environments with puppet-like, stop-motion-inspired movement, a choice that gives the project a distinct identity while allowing a small team to avoid a photorealistic production target.

Twin Swans includes developers and artists with credits on The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Signalis. That background helps explain the emphasis on environmental storytelling, suspense and stylization, but it is not evidence by itself that the finished game succeeds. The quality of the result depends on the complete execution.

A PS5-exclusive debut

PlayStation says the game launched on October 25 in North America and October 26 in the other listed regions. The PlayStation Store edition is exclusive to PS5, supports offline play, is designed for one player and includes accessibility options covering audio, subtitles, controls and visual guidance. It also supports DualSense vibration and PS5 Pro enhancements.

The release date’s alignment with the full moon that gives the project its name is part of the game’s identity, not evidence that its story depends on a real supernatural phenomenon. The more significant editorial consequence is the format: Hunter’s Moon uses horror to revisit the violence of historical accusations without automatically turning the persecuted woman into a magical figure. By connecting research, listening and evasion, it attempts to make information the player’s central survival resource.

That design also separates the release from horror experiences built mainly around combat. Lilith is presented as the target of a community in crisis, not as a monster hunter. If the character system can sustain varied routes, suspicions and discoveries, the village may operate like a social puzzle. That possibility is an inference based on the disclosed mechanics, not a confirmed promise of multiple endings or extensive replayability.
