Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. CD Projekt Red, the company behind the game franchise, will participate in the production alongside producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Deadline first reported the project, Variety confirmed it, and CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski publicly acknowledged the partnership.

Nowakowski said Paramount shares the company’s creative ambitions for the franchise and that more information will be provided at the appropriate time. His statement confirms the partnership without adding a plot, characters or timetable. No director, writer, cast, start of filming or release date has been announced.

Set in the universe does not mean retelling the game

The available description calls the project a film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. That wording is broader than a direct adaptation of the game’s campaign, which follows the mercenary V and Johnny Silverhand. No source has confirmed that either character will appear or that the story will recreate events from the 2020 role-playing game.

The lack of a synopsis also means Night City has not been formally named as the setting, even though it is the franchise’s main location across the games and animation. Keanu Reeves, who portrays Johnny Silverhand in the game, has not been announced for the film. Any proposed casting before an official announcement remains speculation.

CD Projekt Red’s role as a co-producer indicates direct involvement by the franchise owner, but it does not show how creative decisions will be divided between the company and Paramount. Lorenzo di Bonaventura brings experience with large productions based on established properties, although his credit alone does not define the film’s tone, budget or scale.

The project expands a franchise already beyond games

The announcement follows Cyberpunk 2077 passing 40 million copies sold. Its Phantom Liberty expansion reached 15 million copies, according to CD Projekt Red’s first-half 2026 report. The company presented those figures as part of a strategy to keep the brand active through new platforms and formats.

The most established example of that expansion is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. A second animated series, again made in collaboration with Studio Trigger, premieres on Netflix on October 20, 2026 with ten episodes and a new group of characters. There is no information connecting Paramount’s film to either animated series.

That distinction matters because the universe can support independent stories rather than requiring linear sequels. Until a synopsis is released, the safest conclusion is that the film expands the same property without yet holding a defined position relative to the games and shows.

The announcement confirms a deal, not a filming stage

The involvement of a distributor and producers does not mean the film is close to reaching theaters. Without a central creative team, cast or schedule, the project remains in development. Its format, timetable and narrative approach may still change at this stage.

What is confirmed is that Paramount and CD Projekt Red are working on a live-action feature within the franchise. For now, the editorial significance is not a specific storyline, but the addition of a film branch to a property that already spans games, animation and licensed products.
