Bandai Namco has released a five-minute overview trailer for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, bringing together the main elements of its campaign and multiplayer before the official October 2, 2026 launch. The video combines aerial combat, first-person story sequences and a look at Ace Combat Online, which the company describes as the most expansive online mode in the series.
The largest structural change takes place outside the cockpit: multiplayer will feature the first online lobby in Ace Combat. Players can move through an airbase as customized avatars before entering cooperative missions and other match types. Cross-platform play is also confirmed, reducing separation among the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC communities.
The campaign connects aerial warfare with life between missions
The story takes place in July 2029 in the fictional Strangereal universe. The Republic of Sotoa invades the Federation of Central Usea and occupies most of its territory, while the aircraft carrier Endurance retreats with military personnel and refugees aboard. The player character is rescued at sea and assigned the public identity “Wings of Theve,” a legend manufactured to preserve morale among a defeated force.
The trailer emphasizes that the campaign will not rely exclusively on briefings and radio dialogue. First-person sequences follow the pilot around the carrier and show relationships with three squadron members between operations. This presentation brings preparation decisions, personal connections and the consequences of war closer to the player without turning the game into a strict simulator: Bandai Namco continues to describe its flight combat as fast-paced arcade-style action.
In the air, dynamic multilayered clouds shape the environments and contribute to the visual reading of battles. The footage also reiterates special weapons, encounters with large-scale targets and commands for wingmen. Reviews published Friday confirm that squad orders and first-person story scenes are present in the final version; assessments of their quality remain the opinions of the respective critics, not factual claims by the publisher.
Online play expands the game but adds seasonal progression
Ace Combat Online combines a social area with missions for pilots across different platforms. Steam confirms competitive multiplayer, online co-op and cross-platform play. The lobby concept does more than replace a match menu: it creates a persistent space for displaying an avatar and organizing sorties, moving the mode closer to an ongoing service structure.
That expansion is accompanied by the Ace Pass. The official FAQ says every player will have access to a free seasonal progression track, while Premium Ace Pass and Premium Ace Pass Plus options will also be sold. Paid tiers may include aircraft, upgrade items and cosmetics, but Bandai Namco says it has no plans to sell consumables and that the game will not include paid loot boxes or randomized paid rewards. Pass contents are supposed to be visible before purchase.
Platforms, languages and early access
Ace Combat 8 is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Deluxe Edition includes three days of early access, a Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher and cosmetic items. Preorders also include the F-14A and a standalone version of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War; its target platform follows the edition purchased.
On PC, Steam lists Brazilian Portuguese interface text and subtitles, English and Japanese full audio, an SSD requirement and 150 GB of storage. The new trailer therefore works as a summary of the complete product: the campaign remains the narrative center, while the lobby, cooperative play and seasonal progression show that Bandai Namco intends to extend the game beyond its individual missions.
