Dune: Awakening will receive the free Blood and Ice expansion on December 1, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox. The update takes Funcom’s survival game to the Polar Sink in Arrakis’ frozen north and arrives as part of a broader structural shift: single-player will gain offline support in November, while full cross-play and new character-copying options are planned for January 2027.

The dates and features were announced by Funcom. The estimate of roughly 35 hours of progression and the claim that more than one million new players have joined since the console launch are company statements, not independently audited measurements. Funcom has not provided an exact day for offline mode or all of the operating rules for cross-play.

Cold changes the survival logic of Arrakis

Blood and Ice replaces the desert with the Polar Sink, a map split between tundra and ice-cap biomes. Instead of managing exposure only to extreme heat, players will need to seek warmth, craft equipment for low temperatures and deal with groups that control the transportation of water from the polar region.

The expansion will also introduce modules, augments and specialization traits. Ice gathered in the north can be taken back to desert bases, where it will cool equipment and accelerate production. That connection between the new territory and the existing economy keeps the map from functioning only as an isolated campaign: resources obtained in the Polar Sink will remain useful elsewhere on Arrakis.

Funcom says the expansion contains approximately 35 hours of progression. That number should be treated as a reference supplied by the studio, since actual playtime will vary according to pace, experience and play style. The more consequential point is that a free expansion of this scale adds content without immediately dividing the community between players who bought an extra package and those who did not.

Offline mode reduces permanent server dependence

The current single-player option supports an individual experience but still requires an internet connection. The November update is designed to remove that requirement. In practical terms, it improves access on unstable connections, makes travel sessions easier and reduces the need for constant authentication when playing content designed for one person.

This does not automatically turn Dune: Awakening into a game that is entirely independent of online services. Social systems, shared servers, cross-play and connected events will still rely on network infrastructure. Even so, letting the solo campaign run offline is meaningful for availability and practical preservation: a larger portion of the game will no longer require an active server session to be accessed.

All events will be completable in both single-player and multiplayer. After Blood and Ice, Funcom plans to release Water Crisis, an event built around competition for scarce water reserves. A new Events tab will organize progress and rewards, indicating that the company wants a more frequent cadence of temporary or recurring story content.

Cross-play connects platforms, but transfers will remain limited

Full cross-play is scheduled for January 2027 and is intended to bring together players across supported platforms. In the same month, Funcom plans to allow characters to be copied from multiplayer servers into single-player. The reverse route will be more controlled: single-player characters may be copied only to selected private servers or self-hosted PC servers that explicitly permit imports.

This design attempts to balance continuity with integrity. Moving progress from multiplayer into a personal session gives players a way to preserve their journey outside public servers. Restricting the return path, however, reduces the risk that items or progress modified in a solo environment could affect shared economies.

The update will also introduce a cosmetics store offering outfits, vehicle variants and base customization. Funcom presents optional purchases as a way to fund free updates. That rationale is a commercial claim from the company; the actual effect will depend on prices, frequency and how much visual content is concentrated in the store. The catalog will initially rotate, with full availability promised later.

Taken together, Blood and Ice, offline mode and cross-play point to a two-part strategy: expanding Arrakis with free content while removing barriers between ways of playing. The expansion is the most visible component, but offline support may have the greater long-term consequence because it gives players more control over when and how they access the solo experience.
