Bandai Namco has announced Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 3 for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. The new team action game will be free-to-play with optional paid content and will support cross-play between both platforms. Its official specification lists overall support for one to 18 players, but the company has not announced a release date.

The reveal took place during a broadcast celebrating 40 years of Gundam games. The project retains the defining feature of the Battle Operation series: combat in which pilots move between mobile suits and infantry operations. Outside the cockpit, players can plant bombs at bases, request support fire and secure objectives rather than limiting every match to robot duels.

Cross-play replaces platform separation

PlayStation 5 and Steam will operate simultaneously, allowing their users to share matches and online spaces. That decision matters because it reduces community fragmentation from the start and creates a larger matchmaking pool. Bandai Namco has not announced PlayStation 4 or Xbox versions, nor has it confirmed cross-platform progression.

The company also promises more detailed mobile suits, environments and avatars, along with a redesigned interface. Those visual improvements are promotional claims from the publisher and can only be independently evaluated once broader access becomes available. The reveal footage establishes an artistic and technical direction, but does not confirm resolution, frame rate or PC requirements.

Battle Assist aims to lower the entry barrier

One addition is Battle Assist, a system designed to simplify complex inputs and combo execution. Every mobile suit will also receive an SP Skill intended to reinforce its identity and battlefield role. The balance between accessibility and depth will be central: easier entry may attract new players, but Bandai Namco has not explained how these systems will affect competitive controls.

Infantry operations will continue to influence results, preserving the series’ dual scale. Players do not only control machines; they also take risks on foot to interfere with bases and strategic points. This design separates Battle Operation from arena games focused exclusively on unit-versus-unit combat.

Gundam SEED expands the roster beyond Universal Century

Battle Operation 3 will feature Universal Century works while integrating Alternative timelines more extensively. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED will be represented at launch, and Bandai Namco plans to add two or three more Alternative series during the first year of operation. “Plans” is the relevant wording: schedules can change, and the publisher has not identified every future work.

Universal Century titles named for the initial selection include Mobile Suit Gundam, The 08th MS Team and 0083: Stardust Memory. The expected presence of mass-production units such as SEED’s BuCUE indicates that the roster will not be limited to protagonists and elite machines.

The first test is limited to Japan

The closed network test will run on November 20 and 22, 2026 across three daily sessions in Japan Standard Time. Rated matches will support up to 6v6, while custom matches available on the second day can reach 9v9. Ten mobile suits and two maps will be included in this phase.

Applications run from October 29 through November 8, but eligibility is restricted to Battle Operation 2 players residing in Japan. The test itself will run on PS5 and Steam with cross-play. The announcement therefore does not provide an immediate testing opportunity for players elsewhere, and no international test date has been confirmed.

What is confirmed is a structural shift: the sequel begins as a cross-platform title, combines different Gundam timelines and attempts to make its controls more approachable. What remains open is just as important—release timing, detailed monetization, performance, regional availability and the scope of future tests all require additional announcements.
