Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse launches October 15, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Developed by Evil Empire in partnership with Konami, with Motion Twin serving as an advisory studio, the game returns the series to a 2D action-exploration adventure. The release also comes with a technical notice: on Wednesday, October 14, Konami acknowledged issues affecting the PC and Steam Deck versions, as well as a system-language condition on other platforms, and said an update is being prepared.

The story begins in Paris in 1499, 23 years after the events of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Trevor Belmont travels to the city with his daughter Rose, who becomes the playable lead and wields the Vampire Killer whip. The premise does more than bring back recognizable characters. It places a new member of the family at the center of a crisis involving a Paris overrun by creatures and a castle that has appeared amid the chaos.

What changes in the new 2D adventure

The official description calls Belmont’s Curse a 2D action-exploration game with faster, more fluid movement. The whip is more than a weapon: Rose can use it to swing from hooks, close the distance to enemies and cross areas. Equipment includes seven weapon categories and Relics that can modify offensive and defensive capabilities.

The Arcana system is another major component. Defeated bosses are sealed inside Rose’s tarot cards, unlocking spells or special actions. Announced encounters include established franchise figures such as Death, Medusa and Carmilla, alongside a version of Joan of Arc. Together, these systems point to a structure built around exploration, revisiting earlier areas and assembling different combat styles while retaining demanding platforming.

The historical gap explains why the release matters. Castlevania had gone 18 years without an original 2D entry, following 2008’s Order of Ecclesia. Across the broader console and PC line, 2014’s Lords of Shadow 2 was the last fully new game before this return. The brand remained visible through collections, rereleases and guest appearances during that period, but not through a new adventure in this format.

Confirmed issues and a fix in development

Konami’s notice distinguishes confirmed problems from isolated impressions. On Steam and Xbox on PC, the game may fail to launch when V-Sync is turned off and the frame-rate limit is set to Unlimited. The company published a temporary procedure that involves lowering the monitor refresh rate, launching the game, enabling V-Sync and then restoring the previous display setting.

On Steam Deck, some interface elements may appear partially off-screen. On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC, players using certain system languages — mainly Arabic — may be unable to move beyond the title screen after saving and returning to the menu. The temporary recommendation is to change the system language to a supported option such as English. Konami says a fix is being prepared, but it has not announced a date for the patch.

These cases do not mean every version or every player will encounter the problems. The notice describes specific conditions and does not currently list Nintendo Switch among the affected platforms. It also does not establish how the game will perform more broadly at launch.

What early reviews indicate

Pre-release reviews can reveal patterns, but they remain editorial experiences rather than universal measurements. TechRadar’s PS5 review praised the level design, exploration and balance between platforming and combat while reporting rare audio glitches and a few isolated gameplay problems. Folha highlighted progression, equipment variety and whip-based movement, but argued that some platforming sections and stretches of backtracking can become frustrating.

The common thread is less about a single score than the project’s role. Belmont’s Curse is trying to update a formula the franchise helped popularize in a market now filled with independent successors. The larger consequence will become clearer after release: if the new protagonist, customization systems and post-launch technical support can sustain this return, Konami will have a practical foundation for turning a 40th-anniversary project into a more regular new phase for the series.
