R42 / SUMMARY
Gears of War: E-Day launches for the general public on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC. It joins Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on day one, with a co-op campaign, 12-player Horde Siege, and four-versus-four Versus.
KEY POINTS
- The general release is October 6 on Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store, and Steam.
- Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass receive the game on day one.
- The campaign is set 14 years before the first Gears of War and supports up to four players online.
- Horde Siege supports up to 12 participants, while Versus uses four-player teams.
Gears of War: E-Day will receive its general release on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store and Steam. It will also join Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on day one. That date marks the standard public launch: Premium Edition buyers have had early access since October 1.
Developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios, E-Day returns to the moment when the Locust Horde erupts on the planet Sera. The campaign is set 14 years before the first Gears of War and follows younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. It can be played solo, in two-player local split-screen on consoles, or in online co-op for up to four players.
What arrives alongside the campaign
The release extends beyond the story. Horde Siege reshapes the series’ survival mode for matches with up to 12 participants, split into three squads completing missions on the same battlefield. The Coalition has confirmed three Horde Siege maps, four classes, and five objective types at launch. Missions range from short activities estimated at 15 to 20 minutes to ten-wave runs that can last up to an hour.
The competitive Versus mode will use four-player teams. Six maps and four core modes will be available at launch, while ranked play starts on October 13. Progression includes weapon modifications in PvE, classes with 30 levels, and cosmetic items. According to the studio, there will be no battle pass, and nearly every item can be earned through play. Paid exceptions include Premium Edition content, charity offers, and some partnership items.
A release that also tests Xbox’s strategy
E-Day arrives nearly 20 years after the original Gears of War, which debuted in November 2006. Returning to Emergence Day reduces reliance on the later events of the timeline and provides a recognizable starting point for people who only know the franchise’s premise. At the same time, it preserves the pillars that defined the series: third-person cover combat, cooperative play, and close-range encounters.
The launch also comes during a broad Xbox restructuring. That gives the game added significance: it revives one of the brands most closely associated with the console and remains exclusive to Microsoft platforms at launch, even as other company franchises have moved to PlayStation.
Two points should therefore remain separate. The October 6 public release is confirmed, as is inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Whether E-Day can maintain an active community after the campaign will depend on the execution of its seasonal roadmap and player response; that is an editorial outlook, not an established result.
