TOHO and GKIDS released a new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero on Tuesday, September 8. The footage confirms that Godzilla was not fully destroyed in the previous film, shows a new kaiju extermination operation and introduces characters joining Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel. The official global calendar also keeps the film’s Brazilian release on November 5, 2026.

Before its commercial rollout, the film will have its world premiere on September 26 as the Spotlight Gala selection of the 64th New York Film Festival. The festival page lists a 135-minute runtime and additional screenings on September 27 and 30. The theatrical release begins in Japan on November 3, a date tied to the original 1954 Godzilla opening, while GKIDS starts its wide North American release on November 6.

What the trailer confirms

Godzilla Minus Zero is set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. It continues the Shikishima family’s story as postwar Japan struggles to recover and regain a measure of ordinary life. The new footage does not explain the entire threat, but it moves Godzilla’s survival beyond a possibility suggested by the earlier ending: the monster’s return is now an explicit part of the official marketing.

Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return as Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi. Kisuke Iida is also back as Akio Itagaki. The update highlights Masami Nagasawa as Makoto Aoyama, a weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau; Jun Kunimura as Dr. Ogata; and Ko Maehara as Akira Hagiwara, assistant to Professor Murakami, played by Min Tanaka. Kenji Mizuhashi, Eita Okuno and Kai Inowaki round out the newly announced additions.

The campaign uses the line, “There is no third time. Everything ends here.” That supports the idea of a decisive confrontation within this story, but it is not confirmation that TOHO is ending the broader franchise or that this will be the final Godzilla movie. None of the official announcements reviewed makes that wider claim.

IMAX changes the production scale

The clearest technical distinction is that Godzilla Minus Zero is billed as the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX. According to the official announcement, it was shot in Japan with IMAX-certified high-definition digital cameras and optimized for the system. The trailer contains selected moments in the expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio, which uses more of the screen in compatible auditoriums.

That is different from converting or remastering an older film for premium screens. The recent IMAX return of Akira in a restored 4K version, for example, starts with the restoration and re-presentation of a work completed decades earlier. For Minus Zero, framing, capture and finishing are part of the new production’s planning. Even so, a movie being “Filmed For IMAX” does not mean every screening will offer the complete 1.43:1 presentation; that depends on the capabilities of individual theaters.

Yamazaki returns as director, screenwriter and visual-effects lead after Godzilla Minus One won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The trailer points to a larger physical scale, while both the synopsis and the New York Film Festival description continue to place the postwar human drama at the center of the sequel. For now, that combination — expanded spectacle and a character-level perspective — is the film’s most concrete promise.
