Ember Lab has delayed Kena: Scars of Kosmora from 2026 to 2027. The new release window was announced on Thursday, October 1, in a post signed by chief operating officer Josh Grier and game writer Thomas Varga. The studio says it needs more time to polish an adventure designed to be larger and deeper than 2021’s Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

The delay is confirmed, but no release day or month has been provided. The announced platforms also remain unchanged: PlayStation 5 in physical and digital editions, and PC as a digital release. No Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2 version has been announced. Without a narrower window, forecasts about the exact timing of the launch should be treated cautiously.

What changes in Scars of Kosmora

Alongside the new window, Ember Lab explained how it intends to expand the first game’s formula. Scars of Kosmora will remain a character-focused linear adventure, but it will feature broader regions and more opportunities to explore away from the main path. That distinction matters: the developer is not presenting the sequel as an open-world game, but as a larger linear experience.

The story follows a more experienced Kena who has become an accomplished Spirit Guide. She travels to the island of Kosmora seeking a cure for her condition and hoping to reconnect with Orfio, a childhood friend. There, a powerful spirit breaks the staff that keeps her alive. Kena must then learn an ancient form of Spirit Guiding tied to elemental forces.

Kosmora once contained four interconnected cultures, each associated with a guiding element. One of them vanished after a still-unexplained cataclysm. “Alchemystic” temples will function as dungeons built around combat, exploration and puzzles, with transformative rewards that expand Kena’s abilities. A crystalline canine spirit companion will serve as a mount, assist in combat and take part in puzzle-solving.

Why the delay matters

When the game was revealed in February, Sony and Ember Lab said it would arrive in 2026 for PS5 and PC. The change removes a PlayStation console exclusive from the final stretch of this year and moves it into a 2027 calendar that already contains several large releases. That comparison is an editorial inference about the release calendar, not a reason given by the studio.

The official explanation is more straightforward: the team wants to exceed the quality of the first game and needs additional time to finish its expanded scope. Ember Lab did not cite specific technical problems, content cuts or a shift in direction. There is therefore no confirmed basis for attributing the delay to performance, budget or commercial strategy.

The announcement also provides a clearer picture of the sequel’s design. Rather than simply increasing the size of its environments, Ember Lab is linking traversal, combat and puzzles to the new companion and elemental system. The described structure points to an expansion of the original game’s systems without abandoning guided progression. The outcome, however, cannot be judged until the studio shows longer gameplay demonstrations and sets a firm date.

For now, the central fact is simple: Kena: Scars of Kosmora will no longer launch in 2026. Its official window is 2027 on PS5 and PC, and Ember Lab says the extra time will be used for polish.
