Minecraft Dungeons II launches with an early look at Minecraft's new dimension

Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Mojang's action RPG sequel also joined Game Pass and retains the original spin-off's focus on clearing dungeons, collecting gear, and combining abilities rather than recreating the main Minecraft loop of mining and building.

Its biggest addition extends beyond the new campaign. The game introduces the Sift, the first new Minecraft dimension announced in more than 14 years. Players can explore it now in Dungeons II, and it will be added to the Java and Bedrock editions in 2027, although Mojang has not explained how the destination will be accessed in the sandbox.

The Sift connects the sequel to Minecraft's future

In the new RPG, rifts across the world lead to the Sift, a space with distinct landscapes, unfamiliar enemies, and areas changed by blue energy. The dimension is not simply an isolated setting: its presence creates a direct connection between the action spin-off and the future development of the main game.

That gives this release an unusual role within the franchise. Instead of only reusing familiar creatures and blocks, Minecraft Dungeons II becomes the first playable version of an environment that will later be incorporated into Java and Bedrock. This is an editorial inference, but the move suggests Mojang is using the spin-off as a narrative and visual test bed before adapting the concept to a sandbox where exploration, building, and world generation follow different rules.

The company has confirmed the Sift for standard Minecraft but has not revealed its portal, requirements, progression structure, or differences between versions. Features shown in the RPG should therefore not be treated as promises of an identical implementation in 2027.

A connected world replaces the rigid mission sequence

The first Minecraft Dungeons, released in 2020, organized its adventure around stages selected from a map. The sequel connects regions through paths, caves, shortcuts, and side quests. Travel between objectives becomes part of exploration, while a town acts as a base for equipment and preparation.

The change brings the game closer to a continuous adventure world without turning it into conventional Minecraft. Free-form mining and building still are not the core experience. Combat, loot, and progression remain central, now accompanied by jumping, vertical spaces, additional gear slots, and broader customization.

Co-op has also expanded. Players can travel alone or form groups of up to four in local and online modes. Official console listings also identify cross-platform play, allowing the more open structure to be explored by people using different systems.

The sequel aims to balance access and depth

GamesRadar+'s review describes the game as a more detailed evolution of the original's accessible action RPG formula, with loot distribution adjusted to participant levels and endgame challenges called Soul Storms. The same review notes minor technical issues and repetition during part of the campaign. Those are the publication's assessments, not facts confirmed by Mojang.

That balance defines the sequel's approach: preserve straightforward controls and family-friendly co-op while adding more equipment decisions, exploration, and post-campaign activity. The Sift gives that strategy a wider reach. Even players who skip Dungeons II will encounter the launch's consequences when the new dimension reaches the main Minecraft game in 2027.
