New KochiKame anime premieres in 2027 with a new main cast

A new anime adaptation of KochiKame, short for Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo, will air on Fuji TV in 2027 and will also reach platforms that have not yet been identified. The announcement confirmed new performers for the four central characters, revealed the main production staff, and introduced the voices in a trailer released by Shonen Jump’s official channel.

Fukushi Ochiai will play Kankichi Ryotsu, the police officer commonly known as Ryo-san. Shouta Aoi voices Keiichi Nakagawa, M.A.O plays Reiko Akimoto, and Raiko Sakamoto takes the role of Daijiro Ohara. The casting replaces the voices associated with the earlier television production, while the released material retains the police-box ensemble and the mixture of neighborhood comedy and everyday chaos that defines the series.

Gallop returns with a new core production team

Akitaro Daichi is directing the series. Shuichi Koyama and Yoshifumi Fukushima are writing the scripts, while Kenichi Hara handles character design and serves as a chief animation director alongside Noh Gil-bo. Toshihiko Sahashi is composing the music, and Studio Gallop is producing the animation.

Gallop’s return creates a direct link to the anime that aired from 1996 to 2004. It does not mean the new series will repeat the same format or length: the announcement did not provide an episode count, season structure, or runtime. The studio’s involvement is confirmed, but any conclusion about visual or narrative continuity beyond the trailer would be speculation.

The video shows Ryotsu once again causing trouble around the Kameari police box and previews the new portrayals of Nakagawa, Reiko, and Ohara. It primarily functions as a character introduction rather than a full story trailer, and it does not reveal which manga chapters will be adapted.

The project marks two franchise anniversaries

The production is part of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Osamu Akimoto’s manga and the 30th anniversary of the first television series. The manga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1976 and ended its regular run in 2016 after 201 volumes. That longevity helped turn Ryotsu and the Kameari police box into recognizable fixtures of Japanese comedy.

This history also explains why replacing the cast is a significant decision. Rather than introducing unknown characters, the production must establish new voices for figures associated with earlier performers for decades. Official comments present the change as a new beginning: Ochiai said KochiKame was the first manga he read as a child, while Akimoto said the new voices made him feel that the lively police-box group had returned.

Those comments communicate the participants’ expectations and are not independent assessments of the show’s quality. The trailer confirms the intended energy, but the premiere will be the first opportunity to compare its pacing, comedy, and characterization with the earlier anime.

What has not been confirmed

As of September 6, 2026, the announcement only narrows the release window to 2027. There is no month, exact date, episode count, or list of platforms. Simultaneous distribution outside Japan has not been confirmed, and there is no official information about international subtitles or dubbing.

The Japanese website’s reference to distribution across platforms indicates a digital release, but it does not support assigning the title to Netflix, Crunchyroll, Prime Video, or any other service. Likewise, KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops is used to identify the franchise in English, but the new production’s commercial plan for other territories remains open.

The announcement therefore establishes the essentials without completing the calendar: KochiKame will receive a new series in 2027, its four leads have new voices, Gallop is returning for animation, and Akitaro Daichi is directing. Future updates will need to clarify when and where audiences outside Japan can follow the comeback.
