Phoenix Cyclops will join MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2. The character is the first playable expansion in the Year 1 content pass and will arrive for the PlayStation 5 and PC versions. Ray Chase voices Scott Summers in English, while the “Classic” and “Legacy” alternate costumes will also become available on the same date.
Arc System Works chose a version connected to the Phoenix Force instead of making traditional Cyclops the primary design. According to producer Takeshi Yamanaka, the character had been considered for the Unbreakable X-Men team during development of the launch roster. The studio postponed his inclusion while looking for an interpretation that would not simply repeat the identity Cyclops had established in earlier fighting games.
How Phoenix Cyclops plays
The new fighter combines long-range Optic Blasts with close attacks, rushing moves, throws and setup tools. Wide-area fire attacks extend his control of the screen, an important property in a team game where positioning and character exchanges shape much of the offensive pressure.
His central mechanic uses Solar Shards. Players accumulate these fragments by using Optic Blasts and can transform Cyclops into Dark Phoenix after collecting four. The temporary form increases his power but drains health while it remains active. That creates a risk-and-reward decision: the transformation can accelerate a comeback, but it is not a free bonus and requires careful timing.
The stated inspiration comes from Avengers vs. X-Men, the storyline in which Cyclops becomes part of the Phoenix Five and later concentrates the power of the other members. The reference is more than a visual cue. It explains why the playable version moves between Scott Summers’ discipline and a stronger form that carries a continuing cost.
The first step in the Year 1 pass
MARVEL Tōkon launched on August 6 with 20 characters and four-versus-four team battles. Its Year 1 pass includes four additional fighters and one stage, with the remaining content expected by December 31, 2027. Phoenix Cyclops takes the first of those four character slots; the other three have not been officially identified.
The US PlayStation page lists the pass at $34.99. Price, tax and availability may differ in other regions, and the announcement does not say whether Cyclops will be sold separately. The Ultimate Edition has entered its first sale on the US PlayStation Store, while PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can now access a three-hour trial of the full game. The trial does not provide early access to the character, whose release remains scheduled for November.
A public test before release
Visitors to EVO France, held from October 9 through 11, will be able to play Phoenix Cyclops at the game’s booth. That demonstration precedes the commercial release and may produce the first public observations about range, health drain and transformation duration, but it does not rule out balance changes before November 2.
Opening the pass with a less common variation also indicates the expansion strategy: preserve the familiar interpretation through costumes while building the main mechanics around a version that changes how the character plays. Balance will be the decisive issue. A fighter with projectiles, area control, close combat and a temporary power increase needs clear costs if team composition is to retain its variety.
