Viola Prettejohn will be the new Lisbeth Salander, and David Oyelowo will play journalist Mikael Blomkvist in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, an eight-part Sky series produced by Left Bank Pictures. The casting brings the two central Millennium characters back to the Harriet Vanger case, this time in an adaptation set in the present day.

Sky says filming will begin in Lithuania in October 2026. The announcement confirms the leads, writers, directors and part of the European distribution plan, but it does not provide a premiere date, trailer, complete supporting cast or Brazilian platform.

What Sky has confirmed about the new adaptation

Prettejohn, known for work in The Crown and The Testament of Ann Lee, takes the role of hacker Lisbeth Salander. Oyelowo, whose credits include Silo and Selma, will portray Mikael Blomkvist and serve as an executive producer. The plot returns to Stieg Larsson’s first novel: the journalist and hacker investigate the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, who vanished more than three decades earlier from an island connected to a powerful Swedish industrial family.

Amanda Coe, Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna are writing and executive producing the series. King Richard filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green is the lead director, joined by Andrea Harkin and Amy Neil. Left Bank Pictures, the company behind The Crown and Dept. Q, is producing in association with Jarowskij/Yellow Bird.

Sky availability is confirmed for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Sony Pictures Television will handle international distribution and present the project to buyers at MIPCOM 2026. That creates an avenue for deals in other territories, but it is not confirmation of a simultaneous worldwide release.

Eight episodes change the scale of the return to the first book

The new project goes back to the same novel adapted by David Fincher’s 2011 film, which starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig as Salander and Blomkvist. In 2018, The Girl in the Spider’s Web placed Claire Foy in the Lisbeth role for a later story based on David Lagercrantz’s novel. Sky’s production does not directly continue either film. It restarts the narrative with the Vanger case, a new cast and a different structure.

Moving from a feature film to an eight-part season creates more room for the investigation, the Vanger family and the protagonists’ working relationship. That is a possibility created by the format, not a guarantee of greater fidelity. Sky has not detailed episode runtimes or identified which parts of the novel will be preserved, condensed or changed.

According to the company, the story will be moved into the present to examine power, secrecy and misogyny in a more connected world. That description suggests that technology, information circulation and public reputation may operate differently than they did when the novel was published in 2005. The central premise remains recognizable: two people with sharply different methods and social positions try to solve an old disappearance while exposing abuse protected by economic influence.

Adapting the first book again also reduces dependence on previous screen versions. Rather than requiring viewers to follow casting changes and the transition from Larsson’s novels to continuations by other writers, the series returns to the best-known entry point in a franchise that has sold more than 100 million books. Its challenge will be to justify repetition through its contemporary update and additional narrative space, something that cannot be assessed until footage, episodes and a release date are available.
