The Witcher 3 Remastered launches as a free upgrade on September 29

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for eligible owners of CD Projekt Red's RPG. The new edition is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, bundling the base game with Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

The release is not limited to higher resolution and frame rates. The studio lists changes to combat, animation, movement, Roach's handling, monster behavior, and character progression. Transmogrification, new finishers, revised witcher sign effects, and an expanded photo mode are also part of the package.

A systems-focused remaster, not just a visual pass

The most important difference from the next-generation update released in 2022 is scope. That earlier package mainly delivered technical improvements for newer consoles, while the 2026 remaster revisits elements that shape how the adventure plays. The skill tree has been redesigned, combat has been adjusted, and enemies have updated behavior.

Together, those changes are meant to reduce friction that accumulated around an RPG originally released in 2015. Executive producer Jakub Kutrzuba told PC Gamer that the team wanted the experience to meet current standards without rebuilding the game from scratch. That is the studio's stated goal, not an independent verdict on the finished release.

Pre-release comparison footage also prompted criticism of lighting, fog, and color saturation. The reaction shows why technical modernization does not automatically produce visual consensus: sharper detail and new effects can change the atmosphere players associate with the original. A definitive comparison will depend on the version delivered to players and the settings used on each platform.

Switch 2 and Battle.net expand the game's reach

On Nintendo Switch 2, the game receives a native version with motion controls, gyro aiming, mouse support, and touchscreen access for maps, menus, and Gwent. Owners of the first Switch release will be able to claim the upgrade on the newer console at no extra cost, according to CD Projekt Red.

PC gains an additional distribution channel through Battle.net as part of the studio's partnership with Blizzard. GOG, Steam, and the Epic Games Store remain within the game's ecosystem. Moving to new stores and Switch 2 makes the remaster a form of commercial preservation, keeping an eleven-year-old game available on current hardware and services.

The free upgrade sets up the 2027 expansion

The remaster also acts as a bridge to Songs of the Past, the third expansion for The Witcher 3, scheduled for 2027. It will take Geralt to the new region of Letten and will be sold separately, so it is not included in the free package launching now.

That distinction matters because the strategy combines two propositions: updating the existing product without charging eligible owners again, then offering a new paid adventure the following year. With more than 65 million copies sold, according to the company, The Witcher 3 is no longer being treated only as a catalog title. It now serves as the link between the 2015 game, a new expansion, and the franchise's next phase.
