Tokyo Game Show cancels final day as typhoon approaches

Tokyo Game Show 2026 has canceled its entire in-person program for Monday, September 21, after reviewing the expected effects of approaching Typhoon No. 25. The date was meant to close the five-day edition at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Organizers said stronger rain and wind expected during the afternoon also raised concerns about public transport disruption and whether visitors, exhibitors and staff could travel home safely.

The decision does not currently change Sunday, September 20. That day remains scheduled, although organizers warned that individual facilities or activities could be modified or canceled if the weather or conditions around the convention center deteriorate. Visitors have been advised to check forecasts and transport schedules before traveling.

Cancellation shortens the planned five-day edition

TGS 2026 had been promoted as the event's longest edition, with two business days on September 17 and 18 followed by three public days from September 19 through 21. Monday's cancellation means the physical show will end one day earlier than planned. Sunday now becomes the last available day for visitors, unless further changes are announced.

Anyone who purchased a ticket for September 21 will be eligible for a refund. There will not be a single universal process: customers must follow instructions from the company or platform that sold the ticket. Sunday tickets will not be refunded while the event remains scheduled for that date.

That distinction matters because the announcement does not cancel the full convention, nor does it guarantee that every Monday program will survive in digital form. The notice confirms only that organizers are working to stream some stage events through the official program. Whether those streams happen, what they include and when they air still depend on safety conditions at the venue and will be announced separately.

What the change means for visitors and exhibitors

In practical terms, losing the final day concentrates the remaining attendance on Sunday and shortens the in-person window for demos, meetings and stage activities. For exhibitors, the effect is not limited to opening hours: some visibility planned for the closing day may move to streams, but booths and hands-on experiences have no automatic online replacement.

Organizers say their priority is to let everyone leave the area safely before weather conditions worsen and rail services may be disrupted. That rationale is confirmed in the TGS statement. The actual scale of disruption, however, remains a weather forecast rather than damage that has already occurred at the show.

The organizers also warned that further updates may be issued as the typhoon's path and transport conditions develop. For anyone planning to attend on Sunday, that makes the official TGS channels more important than the original schedule: the doors are still expected to open, but the program can change before activities begin.
