Black Bullet returns after 12 years with light novel reboot

Black Bullet is returning to Japanese bookstores after 12 years without a new volume. KADOKAWA announced Black Bullet: New World Order on Wednesday, September 9, describing it as a reboot of the light novels written by Shiden Kanzaki and illustrated by Saki Ukai. The project begins on November 10, 2026, and will continue with two books per month for four consecutive months.

The return is neither a straightforward reprint of the earlier collection nor a direct continuation delivered as a single new volume. The publisher describes New World Order as a restructuring that revises the story published since 2011, reorganizes volumes into multiple parts, and prepares the transition to a new chapter. Kanzaki remains the author, while Ukai is creating new cover illustrations.

The Black Bullet: New World Order schedule

Volumes 1 and 2 arrive together on November 10. Volume 3 follows on December 10, divided into upper and lower parts. Volume 4 uses the same format on January 8, 2027, followed by Volume 5 on February 10. In practical terms, Dengeki Bunko’s schedule amounts to eight physical books across four monthly release dates.

The announced titles indicate that the first books revisit conflicts from the existing series. The most substantial change appears in Volume 5: it will completely rewrite The Bullet That Changed the World, the seventh and final volume of the previous edition, published in July 2014. The new version is divided into Re: The Bullet That Changed the World and Justice & Injustice. After that reconstruction, the publisher says the narrative will move into a new phase, although details of the new plot have not been disclosed.

What returns and what changes

Black Bullet follows Rentaro Satomi and Enju Aihara in a society protected by barriers after the spread of the Gastrea parasite. Rentaro works in Civil Security alongside Enju, one of the infected girls who developed superhuman abilities and can control the virus. The novels began publication in 2011 and inspired manga and anime adaptations before the book series stopped in 2014.

The word “reboot” matters because it prevents all eight announced books from being mistaken for entirely new material. The first stage rebuilds the series’ foundation, followed by a rewrite of Volume 7 that serves as a transition point. The accelerated schedule also gives readers a complete editorial package in four months instead of spacing out revised releases without a clear point at which the story would begin moving forward again.

KADOKAWA also said Shiden Kanzaki is preparing a separate series tentatively rendered as The Essence of Evil for spring 2027 in Japan. That project is distinct from Black Bullet and awaits further details.

The video does not announce a new anime season

The announcement was accompanied by a promotional video narrated by Yuki Kaji and Rina Hidaka, reprising the voices of Rentaro and Enju from the anime adaptation. The actors’ participation and the use of the anime opening song connect the reboot with viewers who discovered the franchise on television, but they do not amount to confirmation of an animated continuation.

For now, the confirmed project is a publishing initiative: new books, new covers, and a restructured narrative. KADOKAWA also announced an anime marathon on the Japanese service ABEMA for October 3, with two weeks of free access after the broadcast. No production, staff, release window, or platform has been announced for a new season.

An international edition of New World Order has not been announced either. Yen Press released the earlier collection in English, but licensing the revised version would require a separate confirmation. The dates disclosed so far therefore apply to the Japanese market.
