R42 / SUMMARY

Activision opened early access to the full Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign on October 16 for buyers of the digital Standard and Vault editions. The game has 16 campaign missions; DMZ early access starts October 20, followed by the full launch on October 23.

KEY POINTS

  1. 01Early access includes all 16 campaign missions.
  2. 02The benefit requires a digital Standard or Vault purchase.
  3. 03Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PS5, Battle.net, Steam and Switch 2 are eligible.
  4. 04DMZ early access begins October 20, with the full launch on October 23.

Activision opened early access to the complete Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign on October 16. The window is available to players who purchased or preordered a digital Standard or Vault edition on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, or Nintendo Switch 2. The general release remains scheduled for October 23.

The key distinction is that this is not a demo or a single preview chapter. According to the official announcement, all 16 missions are available to eligible players. The story follows Private Park Hyun Jun during a large-scale invasion across the Korean Peninsula, while John Price, now described as an outlaw operator, searches for the person behind the conflict. Paris, New York and Mumbai are also among the confirmed settings.

The schedule separates campaign, DMZ and multiplayer

The staggered rollout creates three separate dates. The campaign opened on October 16, DMZ enters early access on October 20, and the full package launches on October 23. In practical terms, digital buyers can progress through the narrative before shifting their attention to the extraction mode and multiplayer.

The campaign also grants progression rewards, including operators, calling cards and experience tokens. Activision says those items will be usable in multiplayer and DMZ once the full game launches. That makes early campaign access part of the broader progression loop rather than only an opportunity to see the story ahead of time.

The commercial condition is important: the benefit is tied to eligible digital editions. Players planning to buy a physical copy must wait until October 23. Activision has also said that Modern Warfare 4 will be sold as a separate premium release and will not be available through Game Pass on day one. A subscription therefore does not replace the purchase required for early access.

What is confirmed and what still needs testing

The mission count, eligible platforms and three rollout dates are confirmed. Members of the press previously played one campaign mission during the beta period, but that limited hands-on session is not the same as reviewing the complete package. Conclusions about total length, stability, balance and narrative quality still depend on testing the final version and should not be treated as settled.

Opening the campaign one week before launch changes the competition for players' attention. In a franchise historically associated with multiplayer, separating the story reduces the internal conflict between modes and gives players a reason to finish missions before DMZ arrives. At the same time, tying access to a digital purchase makes the window a preorder incentive, a commercial decision that limits the advantage to part of the audience.

For players who already planned to buy digitally, the window provides additional time without removing content from the final release. For everyone else, the essential point is straightforward: campaign, DMZ and multiplayer will be available together from October 23, with no need to take part in either early-access stage.
