New Hunger Games trailer pits Haymitch against Snow and the arena

Lionsgate released the second full trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The new preview places young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, in a more direct confrontation with Ralph Fiennes’ President Snow and shows how Katniss’ future mentor tries to challenge the arena’s logic from within. The film opens in theaters on November 20.

The footage confirms previously announced elements while expanding scenes from the tribute parade, Haymitch’s time in the Capitol, and the 50th Hunger Games. Its editing also advances an idea larger than the youth of one familiar character: it positions Haymitch as part of a resistance that existed long before Katniss became the face of a revolution.

The Second Quarter Quell changes the scale of the Games

Sunrise on the Reaping adapts Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name, published in March 2025, and takes place 24 years before the first Hunger Games. The story follows the 50th edition, known as the Second Quarter Quell. Its special rule doubles the number of participants: every district sends two boys and two girls, raising the total from 24 to 48 tributes.

That difference is not merely numerical. Producer Nina Jacobson told Reuters that filming had to accommodate all 48 competitors and their stunt doubles. Director Francis Lawrence described the production as a major operation, particularly because of the need to keep the young cast safe. Part of the shoot took place in a remote area of Asturias, Spain, with little infrastructure.

The trailer turns that scale into images of a more crowded spectacle that is harder to control. There are more bodies in the parade, more potential alliances, and more pieces for the Capitol to arrange in front of its cameras. Haymitch appears before the trauma that defined him

Earlier films introduced Haymitch as a traumatized, alcohol-dependent victor played by Woody Harrelson. The new story returns to a time when he was still an optimistic teenager from District 12. Joseph Zada has to show the transition between those versions without simply imitating Harrelson’s performance.

Francis Lawrence has said the role requires Haymitch to move from hope through tragedy and eventually toward a willingness to resist. The trailer emphasizes that path by contrasting his relationship with Lenore Dove, played by Whitney Peak, with the Capitol’s control. His conflict with Snow receives particular attention in a scene where Haymitch is the only person clapping in a silent stadium, a small gesture that the edit frames as public defiance.

The cast also includes Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, and Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle. Together, they connect familiar characters to an earlier point in the timeline without reducing the production to a collection of younger versions.

The campaign frames the origin of a resistance

Lionsgate describes the new trailer with an invitation to witness the beginning of a revolution. That is the distributor’s promotional framing, not confirmation that Haymitch single-handedly starts the movement that later supports Katniss. Interviews with the filmmakers point to a broader picture: figures such as Beetee and Plutarch had already opposed the Capitol, accumulating defeats and sacrifices before the original trilogy.

This approach changes the narrative function of a prequel. Rather than only filling in how Haymitch won, the film can examine how the Capitol manipulates images, restages events, and turns violence into public broadcasting. The trailer suggests that Haymitch recognizes the arena as a machine that can be sabotaged, but it does not reveal how far the adaptation will take that interpretation.

Confirmed facts currently include the release date, the principal cast, Francis Lawrence as director, and Billy Ray as screenwriter. The reading that the campaign is establishing a collective origin for the rebellion is an inference based on the trailer and the filmmakers’ comments.
