Smallville turned 25 on October 16, 2026. The series premiered in the United States on the same date in 2001 and followed Clark Kent before he fully assumed the Superman identity. In an anniversary interview published by TheWrap, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said the freedom they used to reshape the character would be harder to secure in today’s adaptation environment.

Their comments do not announce a new season or revival. They describe the conditions that allowed the production to change familiar parts of the mythology: Clark and Lex Luthor began as friends, the meteor shower became central to the local origin story, and Lionel Luthor was created for the series. Gough and Millar say limited studio interest in guarding every detail of canon gave them room to make those decisions.

A character drama before the suit

The project emerged when the network was cautious about material perceived as overtly superheroic or comic book-like. According to Gough, the early direction was to reduce those elements. That restriction ultimately defined Smallville’s main distinction: it examined guilt, friendship, family and adolescence before reaching the costume.

The series did not abandon Superman mythology, but reorganized it around a long-running teen drama. Clark and Lex’s conflict had years to develop instead of beginning with both men in their established positions. The choice created tension that depended less on recognizing references and more on watching a personal relationship deteriorate.

Millar argues that the show helped prepare television for the later expansion of superhero series. That is the co-creator’s assessment, not a proven causal relationship. Even so, its model of following comic-book characters across multiple seasons preceded the period in which The CW made productions such as Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl recurring parts of its schedule.

Creative freedom also produced limitations

The anniversary has not been framed only as a celebration. In an earlier reunion covered by Entertainment Weekly, Gough, Millar and Kristin Kreuk acknowledged that Lana Lang should have been given more agency. The creators said her stories became repetitive, while Kreuk explained that she did not yet have the experience to participate in those decisions with the confidence she would have today.

The acknowledgment matters because it shows the other side of a long and flexible production. Freedom to invent relationships and expand mythology did not guarantee equal development for every character. Ten seasons also required a large number of intermediate stories, and some choices lost strength through repetition.

What changed between television in 2001 and 2026

Gough and Millar compared the pace of Smallville with their current work on Wednesday. The older production took roughly nine months to deliver a 22-episode season; Wednesday Season 3, they said, used a similar period for eight episodes, with more time assigned to effects, action and finish. The comparison illustrates a structural exchange: shorter seasons concentrate resources, while the older model offered more self-contained stories and more room for experimentation.

Hulu currently carries all ten seasons in the United States, preserving the show’s extensive scale for new viewers. Availability differs by country and should not be inferred from the US catalog.

The creators said they are open to exploring where the characters would be 25 years later, but also indicated that they have been turned down when discussing the idea. This is stated interest, not a confirmed project. At 25, the concrete news is a reassessment of a creative method: Smallville grew because it could disobey parts of canon, and its own authors believe that margin would be narrower now.
